Breakfast: The Most Important Meal of An Athlete's Day
By Nancy Clark, MS RD CSSD
For Active.com
Without question, breakfast is the meal that makes champions. Unfortunately, many active people follow a lifestyle that eliminates breakfast or includes foods that are far from champion-builders.
I commonly counsel athletes who skip breakfast, grab only a light lunch, train on fumes, gorge at dinner and snack on "junk" until bedtime. They not only rob their bodies of the nutrients needed for health, but also lack energy for hi…

COMMONWEALTH Games gold medallist Brad Kahlefeldt may never have a better chance to re-establish himself at the pinnacle of his sport.
After three years in which injury and illness have repeatedly disrupted his momentum, his luck has turned, and so has that of the men who have dominated the sport in that period -- Spain's Javier Gomez and Britain's Alistair Brownlee.
Brownlee has a confirmed stress fracture of the femur and will be out of racing until midway through…

Tim Beardall on how to survive an Ironman
Arrived in china and the weather was quite cool and not to be expected, although we were told it would be warm for the race. I was sick two nights before race with vomiting and diarrhoea and therefore up all night and unable to take in fluids or food. The next day all I did was sleep.
Race morning felt a little groggy but jumped on the shuttle bus to transition. Weather forecasters predicting blustery conditions with a temperature of 35 degrees.

Nutrition for Triathlon Recovery
We spend so much time in the pool, on the bike & belting the pavement; yet our recovery nutrition is often not matched to the effort that goes into training – especially for those of us that don’t have the luxury of being a professional athlete!
Many triathlete’s train TWICE a day. When you do this, your recovery nutrition becomes even more crucial, as your muscle’s energy stores (glycogen) have less time to re-gather themselves. If you don’t start your refuelling process within…

Atkinson pulls out of Sydney triathlon
Australia will be without Olympian Courtney Atkinson for next Sunday's world championship triathlon series opener, but the news is promising on Emma Moffatt.
Atkinson has pulled out of the race, which starts and finishes at the Sydney Opera House, as he continues to recover from a virus.
Moffatt has been in doubt as she recovers from the shoulder fracture suffered in a January bike crash, but some strong swim sessions have Triathlon Australia (TA) confident about her status…

The Top 5 Excuses for Skipping Your Triathlon
1. I don't have enough time.
Americans watch an alleged 32 hours a week of television (internet time not included). If you cut even half of that, you could squeeze in time for training. Or, if you must, time your treadmill training to your favorite show.
2. I am no runner/cyclist/swimmer.
Everyone starts somewhere right? Find your weaknesses and work at them. Hey--if you're kids can handle taking off the training wheels or the floaties, you can too.

Winter training, for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, may have been a daunting task. The good news is you, the diligent athlete, are nearing the end of this dark season, and the promise of Springtime weather is oh-so-close. Sports Science Update: Dehydration Does Not Cause Muscle Cramps
Written by: Matt Fitzgerald
Ask 100 runners what causes muscle cramps during exercise and at least 60 of them will say it’s either dehydration or electrolyte depletion or both. This idea goes back more than 100 years, yet it has never been supported by well-designed scientific studies. In fact, most studies have found that hydration and electrolyte levels are higher in athletes at the moment a cramp strikes than they are in non-cramping athletes who have performed an equal amoun…

How to run - In practice
Previously I wrote an article called "How to run" where I tried to describe the basic aspects of good running form. The "take home" messages from that story was that running begins with your hip position, and that core strength and control is essential to achieving and maintaining hip position.
That article generated some interesting questions and comments, which served to highlight how individual running form is, and how individual the application of running form is. In this article…
