Ultramarathon, Vegetarianism and Locavores…
Just back from a run in beautiful Boulder, Colorado and it reminded me of a talk I attended last week given by the ultramarathoner Scott Jurek. In his talk, at Jack Rabbit in Union Square-NYC, Scott hit on three basic principles of endurance training, those being specificity, periodization and recovery. Which brings me to my run. Altitude, at least for a flat-lander, forces you to slow down. Given that it was my first run at altitude, I intentionally backed off and just went out for a relaxed ea…
Jumping In: Going From General To Specific
Written by: Matt Fitzgerald

The second is movement from generality to specificity. A workout is considered race-specific if it emulates both the speed and endurance challenges of racing. In other words, a race-specific workout entails swimming, cycling or running at a speed that’s close to race speed—either in a single effort or in multip…

Hit the Treadmill for a Fast 10k
By Gale Bernhardt
Every triathlete wants a faster 10k time at the end of an Olympic distance race.
The race-day script reads, "I was out of the water with a solid swim, followed by a killer 40k bike ride. Off the bike, I cruised through a fast 10k run. Sweet."
However, many triathletes struggle to make a faster 10k happen, particularly those who do not come from a running background.
One useful tool when trying to improve 10k running speed is a…

Jumping In: Training At Various Intensity Levels
Written by: Matt Fitzgerald
The body adapts differently to different speeds, or intensity levels, of swimming, cycling and running. Doing very short sprints at maximum speed enhances your ability to produce power and activate muscle mass to propel forward motion, whether it’s in the pool, on the bike or on foot. At the other extreme, doing very long workouts at a moderate speed enhances your body’s ability to use fuel efficiently and to continue moving efficiently despite mount…

Preparation and Training
or most triathletes and those who are planning to compete in their first triathlon, the sport is great fun, and a celebration of good health. Occassionally, a participant may not be ready for competition due to lack of training or sickness.
The rules remind us that triathlon is a challenging and strenuous sport and must be taken seriously. Article 3.1, the first of the "General Rules of Conduct," lays the responsibility of making sure one is prepared and healthy enough to participate…
